Tips to help you get your claim right
Your fuel tax credit rates may have changed recently and may change regularly, so it’s important to make sure you are using the right rates. Check the current rates online at Fuel tax credit rates and eligible fuels.
The following tips can help you get your claim right:
- use the right rates – many rates change regularly so check each time you lodge your BAS
- check your fuel is eligible – a common error is to claim for vehicles with a GVM of 4.5 tonne or less travelling on a public road
- keep records to support your claim including how you apportioned fuel for different activities
- check your calculations – a common error is claiming fuel tax credits based on the cost of the fuel instead of the quantity of fuel multiplied by the relevant rate
- check your contracts – the wording of the contract may impact who can claim fuel tax credits.
The ATO also have the following online tools available:
- the Fuel tax credit eligibility tool helps you determine which of your activities are eligible and what rates apply
- the Fuel tax credit calculator helps you work out how much you can claim.
These tools have been improved, making them quicker and easier to use.
